About Pilates

Pilates is mind-body exercise using a variety of equipment or a floor mat.

Be aware, notice your movement habits and change them if necessary

Pilates refers to mindful movement, which means that ANY and ALL Pilates exercises are initiated with a strong awareness of the deepest postural muscles so that proper alignment can be maintained throughout a movement sequence. Good alignment maximises muscular function and prevents injury.

Is it just about your ‘core muscles’?

It is much more than a “core-only” workout. Each exercise incorporates your full body – it is like “teamwork” of your muscles and an exact cooperation of effort through the body including the brain.

It is a safe and sensitive exercise system, which is one reason why it is often recommended for rehabilitation and before or after giving birth.

Endless repetitions?

In your Pilates class the quality of movement is stressed over the quantity of movement, so you will only do 3-10 repetitions of the same exercise. That is how long our attention span lasts. If you stop concentrating, you are not doing Pilates anymore and you will not benefit from it.

Something you can take home – the outcome of your efforts

Pilates teaches body awareness, good posture and easy movement.

This method will improve your flexibility and agility and you will teach yourself to move around with less effort and tension.

It is good for better physical fitness and health, for improved quality of life, for athletic performance and injury prevention.

Pilates for everyoneWhy choose Pilates?

1 it works for people from all walks of life – regardless of gender, age or fitness level

2 It is effective – strengthens and streches the body all the once

3 the result of your hard work is improved alignment and strength of the central body

4 You learn to use your mind to control your body and develop a strong body awareness, which means moving around in your your everyday life will become much easier (even painfree)

5 Pre & Post Natal Pilates –

Pilates is ideal during normal healthy pregnancy

  • to maintain strength,
  • to prepare for delivery and
  • to avoid common pregnancy problems.

It is excellent as a post-natal exercise routine when weakened abdominal muscles and the day-to-day care of a baby make it difficult for women to regain strength and figure.

6 Doing Pilates on a regular basis improves flexibility, agility and economy of motion.

Pilates history

Joseph Pilates (1883-1967) was the inventor of the Pilates method. He used the word “Contrology” to name his method and teachings. In an extensive essay from 1957 Joseph defines the essence of his work like this:

“Contrology is the science and art of body-mind-spirit development through mild but rigorously disciplined physical movement. It is specifically designed and conducted to arouse sluggish blood, d-i-s-t-e-n-d every capillary, force lymph through every interstice: by s-t-r-e-t-c-h-i-n-g every muscle and sinew and wringing-out the body. All under the strict control of the awakened brain in each of its ten billions of nerve cells.”
